Archil Nikoleishvili, Head of the National Forestry Agency met with the State Representative of Mtskheta-Mtianeti Region, Davit Nozadze, and the mayors of the municipalities. The Head of the Agency informed the participants about the forest reform and the changes envisaged by the "New Forest Code".

It should be noted that the new code completely abolishes long-term licenses for timber production and the practice of "social logging". A sustainable forest management model is being introduced in the country, within the framework of which the so-called "business yard" has been organized in almost all regions of Georgia. The timber will be produced by the forest management body, and the population will be able to buy both firewood and timber in the "business yard" at any time of the year. As a result, forest use for timber production will be much more efficient, the negative impact on the forest will be decreased, and the risks of illegal logging will be significantly reduced.

"The transition to a new model of forest management is due to the fact that the sector is essentially moving to the principle of farm management. Which makes the National Forestry Agency more flexible and efficient. The Forestry Agency can become an important player in the employment market, especially in mountainous regions, which will help improve public life. It is essential for the local population to have accurate and precise information about the services of the Agency, in this process the role of the mayors of the municipalities is important, ”- said Archil Nikoleishvili.

The aim of the new Forest Code is to ensure the protection of Georgia's forest biodiversity, as well as to maintain the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of forests for ecological, social, and economic functions. The basis of forest management will be the basic principles and legal instruments given in the Forest Code.

The updated institutional model of forest sector management should respond to both forest and country challenges and should address such aspects as stimulating the recreational use of forest resources and increasing the role of forests in rural development, which in turn will reduce the social impact on forests.

The new Forest Code makes it mandatory to hire professionals in the forestry sector. The forest management body should ensure the mandatory participation of persons with the status of forester and forestry specialist in forest management.
